  • 3200-3700 East 8th Street Oakland California - South Kennedy Tract

There are two main problems for E 8th street from 3200-3700 blocks: The first is excess traffic due to the lack of a sign informing drivers of no I-880 or High st. access thru E 8th.

Many people exit I-880 @ Fruitvale when the fwy is moving slowly and think E8th may be a frontage road. The amount of wasted time and fuel is astounding, many cars drive all the way down only to turn around and come back. Each day scores of vehicles are misled, and the occasional semi-trailer as well, on at least one occasion a tractor trailer jackknifed backing into 36th ave and required a tow truck to get out. Other semi-trailers sometimes have not known there is a proper turnaround after making the right turn onto 37th, and thus end up backing all the way down E 8th and across the Fruitvale intersection.

The second major problem along the same stretch is vehicles speeding. There are no speed bumps for such a long stretch of road, I have seen countless wildlife and pets killed as the result of dangerously fast cars- with cars parked and the road striping, it is somewhat narrow and the poor animals dart out from between the cars, at that speed no one can react. Due to the large semi- wild grassy strip of Cal-Trans property alongside the freeway, many local animals and pets cross here.

This problem is sometimes compounded by illegal RV/campers parked along an already narrow street (due to being parallel to I-880) and pedestrians have difficulty seeing around obstructions while crossing under the freeway (E 8th to E 9th walkway just a bit down from 34th)

A handful of times over the last 15 years there have been major accidents (thankfully mostly involving parked vehicles with no occupants) sometimes from DUI or car thieves. The way the road goes the most extreme speeders do not see the sharp 90 degree turn at 37th, going into the Home Depot iron parking lot fence as a result, or losing control into neighbor's parked cars as often has happened.

While speed bumps are a more major undertaking and may not be feasible in the short term, proper signage could prevent many of said speeders abusing E 8th it if aware it only leads to a dead end.
